Call the office of each counselor, professional or licensed social worker you are considering to find out whether the counselor and his or her staff are pleasant, helpful and courteous. Find out all contact information for the counselor, get his or her hours, and consider whether the counselor is reachable at any time. Keep in mind that such professionals provide counseling, support, advice, evaluations, and case management. A clinical social worker, trained in psychotherapy, has a background in sociology, growth and development, advocacy, mental health theory, human behavior, medical issues, and psychology. Social workers are trained in the human condition, societies, communities, human science, children and family relationships, development, movement and settlement, and clinical and medical issues. They also study people and how they interact as a group in a society and as individuals. Inquire how long the social worker has been in business, whether as part of a clinic, school, government office or private practice. Ask how long appointments last and what the rate is. You want to choose a counselor who is easily available, will make time for you when you need it, and is comforting to speak with. Ask if the social worker makes house calls, as many do. Take a drive by the counselor’s office. Is it well maintained and inviting? Appearance can tell you a lot about the professionalism of the counselor. Ask your friends and family for recommendations on the local counselors they trust, or ask your doctor for references.

Social workers may be psychologist, making claims that have no substantial data to back up their work for an individual to make a sound decision. Many social workers are front groups for psychiatrist whose diagnosis may have no scientific proof to this day. Many social workers may distribute information in detail giving specific proof of how mental illness is a manufactured label by the psychiatric industry to push more drugs on the public. Finding information that offers the truth about mental health may save the lives of many. Most individuals feel it may be important to avoid any type of treatment for so-called mental illness. Perhaps an individual would do best if he or she found the cause of the problem instead of treating the symptom.
